Everyone is feeling the pinch at the moment. That doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t indulge in the activities you love. If playing the guitar is a passion of yours and it is no longer possible to get tuition from the best instructors money can buy, there are always alternatives. Jump in at the deep end, pick up where you left off and begin teaching yourself. The sense of achievement that corresponds with developing skills with your own methods should be encouragement enough for you to realize the many benefits this method of learning promotes.
The main problem that most self-taught guitarists will face is accountability. As you are no longer attending lessons and paying for tuition, you do not have anyone to hold you accountable if you don’t practice. You’re not losing any money by practicing, so why should you teach yourself guitar when there’s a great game on television? The solution to this issue is goal setting.
It is extremely important that you have distinct goals from the beginning of your self-tuition. If you are not able to hold yourself accountable and tick off your completed goal list as you go along, then you may fall short with your aspirations. That doesn’t necessarily mean that you will stop playing the instrument in general, but your playing level will not progress in line with another guitarist teaching themselves with clear goals in mind.
Remember, that it is always important to establish and expand a network of musicians to consult regarding any issues that you may encounter. Whether it is a new scale pattern that you are stuck on, or where to buy acoustic guitar strap locks, a more experienced guitarist will generally have the answer. To teach yourself guitar you will need commitment, patience and organization, but you must keep in mind that you are eliminating the cost and time consumption of meeting a guitar teacher on a weekly basis.
