Vaginal yeast infections are caused by an overgrowth of the Candida albicans species of yeast. (Yeasts are a type of fungus). The condition is extremely common and it is thought that 3 in 4 women will experience a yeast infection at some point during their lives, with many women having recurrent infections.
The infection causes an extreme itching sensation both within and around the vagina. The area tends to become sore, red and irritated and there may be pain when passing urine. Sexual intercourse may be uncomfortable and a thick, clumpy discharge often develops.
There are many triggers for yeast infections. Candida albicans is thought to be present on the vagina at all times and can explosively grow into an outbreak if conditions allow. Hormonal changes, antibiotic use and harsh chemicals may alter the pH and biochemistry of the vagina providing an opportunity for yeast growth. It is also thought that you are more likely to experience a yeast infection if you do not keep the vaginal area cool, dry and well-ventilated at all times. For example wearing tight, synthetic underwear, damp exercise clothes or a wet bathing suit for prolonged periods of time are not recommended. It is also possible to pick up a yeast infection by having sex with an infected partner.
Most yeast infections are treated with antifungal creams applied externally to the vulva and via a suppository applicator that is inserted into the vagina. These topical treatments can be purchased over the counter at most pharmacies. When researching how to get rid of a yeast infection, two products will frequently be mentioned: Monistat and Gyne Lotrimin. These are available at different concentrations and vary between a 1-10 day course. For chronic cases of infection your doctor may suggest oral antifungal therapy, but this should only be followed under close medical supervision as side effects are possible.
